Sacroiliac pain

The sacroiliac joint is located in the pelvic, and is passing on the loads from the bottom of the spine to the lower limbs.

Although this joint has just a few degrees of mobility, in some situations like previous lumbar spine fusion, hip pathology, or lumbo sacral junction variation, the shearing forces passing through the joint are significantly increased.

The clinical presentation is mainly right or left sided lumbar pain, buttocks pain, and pelvic pain.

The diagnosis is based on clinical examination and sacro iliac injection.

Sacroiliac fusion

Sacroiliac fusion is offered when conservative treatment including painkillers, physiotherapy, and injections has failed to release the pain.

It is a minimaly invasive, percutaneous surgery. Standing and walking is usually possible in hours after the procedure. Still, to release some of the pressure on the joint and enhance fusion, walking with crutches is preferred for the first weeks.

Three titanium implants are placed across the joint in a triangular way, to stabilize the joint en enhance fusion between the sacrum and the iliac bone.
