Spine fractures
Spine fractures are frequent, and mostly occur at the thoracolumbar junction.
Most of fractures are compression fractures.
The pressure applied on the upper vertebral endplate when standing or sitting leads to vertebral body collapse and pain.
The surgical treatment called kyphoplasty, consist in restoration the vertebral body height and filling it with cement.
It provides fast and effective pain relief, and allows a quick return to daily activities.
Treatment
The orthopaedic treatment with a brace can be used when the vertebra is not collapsed and the pain is controlled. A regular clinical and radiographic follow-up is necessary.
Kyphoplasty is a minimal invasive surgical treatment.
It restores the vertebral body height and shape, after what cement is injected in the vertebral body to fill the fracture gap.
It is a mini invasive surgery without skin or muscle dissection.
It is performed through two 5 mm skin incisions, and with fluoroscopic control. It allows effective pain relieve, and allows quick return to daily activities.
Spinal osteosynthesis or fixation can be necessary to stabilize the fracture. The vertebra above and below the fracture are linked together with small screws and rods. The surgery if often performed using a mini invasive approach.
