Hernie discale cervicale - IRM rachis cervical

Cervical disc herniation

A disc herniation is a fragment of an intervertebral disc that has migrated and may be compressing a nerve root or the spinal cord.

It is responsible for pain like sciatica in the upper limbs.

In case of spinal cord compression there may be associated motor function weakness, imbalance.

In case of muscle weakness the treatment has to be done in emergency.

The surgical treatment aims at releasing the neurologic structures by removing the disc herniation most often through an anterior approach and replacing the disc with an implant (anterior cervical decompression and fusion).

Anterior cervical decompression and fusion

Removal of a cervical disc herniation is done through an anterior approach.

The herniated fragment and the disc are removed.

An intervertebral body device called a “cage” is placed between the two vertebra, along with a bone graft to maintain stability and ensure bony healing.
